Be Strong.

Translating the Hebrew word “sefarim” as “books” is often incomplete. A Holy Jewish text is not just a book; it is a conversation. You enter into dialog with everyone involved in the process of creating a fantastic item.

Today in the 929 cycle we finished the book of Bereshit or Genisis. I have been studying using the Torat Chaim, which I received as a gift from my future in-laws after my year studying in Yeshiva.

As soon as I turned to the last page, I saw the big, bold letters above the commentary — CHAZAK, and I remember the phrase we call out in shul when we finished a book of the Torah.

“Chazak, chazak, venitchazek!”

“Be strong, be strong, and we will be strong!”

One of the beautiful things about the Jewish people is their attention to detail. Nothing would have been lost if I didn’t have that word waiting for me at the end of the book. But seeing it gave me a reminder and an experience that strengthened my soul on a day that I needed it.

Be Strong.
